German Wines
Germany, the land of famous marques such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche. So what do cars and wines have in common? Experienced wine connoisseurs and serious wine collectors will tell you that you can also expect nothing less than the very best wines in the world from Germany too!
German Rieslings have often been associated to be the most aromatic yet elegant and pure white wines in the world. Whether they are dry or sweet, their racy acidity makes these refreshing, low in alcohol, lighter-styled (unoaked) and long-lived wines the perfect drink with haute cuisine, Chinese cuisine and our region’s hot climate.
Start collecting them before they turn into Burgundy-like prices!

1. Bernhard Huber Alte Reben Spätburgunder 2004

"Alte Reben " literally means "old vines" in German. Crafted from a careful selection of low yielding vineyards, this offering is Huber's first level of wines that are capable of tremendous improvements with age. It is only starting to show off it's complex nuance of stewed cranberries and baked strawberries. Staggeringly youthful at this age by Burgundian standards (at this quality level). Awarded top Pinot at The Peak 'G' 2011. Enjoy now till 2015. WV

2. Bernhard Huber Alte Reben Spätburgunder 2009

Made from vines of 25 to 40 yrs old. 18 months in new oak (French and German). If you wish to compare the quality with Burgs, this would be a Premier Cru equivalent. Obvious leap in quality compared to Malterdinger 2009. Good structure. Red fruits, ripe acidity and fine tannins all in harmony. Drink 2015 till 2025.

3. Bernhard Huber Alte Reben Spätburgunder 2002

2nd release from Huber. From their library collection. Surprising youthful compared to the 2004 Alte Reben. Medium bodied. So refined. Great harmony though the structure suggests that this will live on for another 10 to 15 years. Very small quantities released! Drink now till 2025. WV

4. Bernhard Huber Bienenberg Spätburgunder 'Reserve' GG 2007

This Grosse Gewachs (GG) wine is equivalent to burgundy's grand cru level. This wine demonstrates the harmony of richness, freshness, depth and restrained power. Will stay coy for a few more years but certainly capable of showing off its beauty in time. Now showing heady aromas and palate of redcurrants and raspberry jam, it will undoubtedly evolve into a wine with fine structure and caressing tannins with a mineral finish. WV

5. Bernhard Huber Bienenberg Spätburgunder 'Reserve' GG 2009

Nice perfume nose of red berries and dark cherries, dark plums. Great follow through on the palate - ripe red fruits, superb concentration yet balanced by ripe acidity which makes this wine approachable at this stage. Served at the optimum temperature of 16 degrees, you will get the idea of minerality after several sips. Great value GRAND CRU! Drink now till 2025. WV

6. Bernhard Huber Malterdinger Pinot Noir 2008

Winner of the Wine Review Challenge's "Best Pinot" beating all the new world and burgundy classics in 2010!!! A seal of approval from a panel of Singaporean tasters. Needs time to breathe in order to shed it's young greengage aromas.

7. Bernhard Huber Malterdinger Pinot Noir 2009

This is a superb village quality wine. Way surpass many Burgs that you probaly have tasted. Dark crimson, ripe red fruits bordering black fruits. Good concentration, freshness and balance. Very long and inviting (for another sip). Best paired with rack of lamb or beef at this stage. For Burg lovers, possible on its own but would benefit with futher bottle aging of 1 to 2 years. Superb value! Drink now till 2020. WV (Tasted twice - Sept 2011 and Jan 2012)

9. Bernhard Huber Pinot Noir 2010

First rung on the ladder of Huber's wines towards stratospheric balance and elegance. Typical pinot. Nothing forced, nothing heavy. Just the way the grapes meant them to be, lightly coloured, beautiful perfume of flowers, strawberries and cream. No rough edges, and satisfying finish. Awarded The Local Nose Recommended Wine.

10. Bernhard Huber Pinot Noir 2009

This is a WINNER when it comes to entry level Pinot Noir. Much better than most Bourgogne AC (regional quality Burgundy). When one says 'a good producer also makes quality entry level wines', this is a good example! Great vintage - 2009. Buy this if you love Pinot, as Huber has already sold out this wine in Germany after being voted by Frankfurt Allgemeine newspaper as Best Value Pinot in 2011. Drink now. WV

11. Bernhard Huber Schlossberg Spätburgunder 'Reserve' GG 2007

This Schlossberg GG 2007 was the favourite among the wine profeesionals in Singapore when we showed it alongside Bienenberg GG 2007. To us, this needs more time. Medium to full bodied. Fine tannins yet big structure and concentration. Very long finish. So impressive that even famous French restaurant Guy Savoy Singapore has this on their list! Drink 2015 till 2030. WV

12. Bernhard Huber Schlossberg Spätburgunder 'Reserve' GG 2009

Voted the best German Pinot Noir by Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung(Germany's highest circulation newspaper). 2009 was a great vintage for German Pinot Noir and Huber's very basic entry level wine - Huber Pinot Noir 2009 is a testament. And there is a reason why Guy Savoy (French restaurant which doesn't need a German Pinot) in Singapore is serving the 2007 vintage! If you wish to buy this wine and wish to drink it shortly, we recommend to pair with a nice ribeye. Drink 2019 till 2035. WV (Sept 2011)

13. Bernhard Huber Wildenstein 'Spätburgunder 'R' 2005

This is the wine that is closest to Huber's heart. Spatburgunder/Pinot Noir lovers in Germany already discovered this wine from the 2009 vintage Wildenstein which is touted as the best Spatburgunder Huber has ever produced to date. Huber spents 2 to 3 times more hours per hectare on his vineyards so you can imagine what he does for this flagship vineyard - Wildenstein. Drink his GGs to know what to expect from Wildenstein. WV

14. Bernhard Huber Wildenstein Spätburgunder 'R' 2007

Huber's flagship Spatburgunder/Pinot Noir. Made from a parcel/block near to Bieneberg. It's located at the back of the Weingut itself. Compared to Bienenberg, this site has more iron content, more rocky and a tougher terrain. Intense red-black fruits on the palate, massive structure and very fine tannins. More minerally than Bienenberg. Makes you think/extrapolate its potential! Drink 2017 till 2030. WV

If you are a Burgundy lover, buy this! Huber's best wine to date. How would you know?! Try their Bienenberg GG 2009 or Schlossberg GG 2009. Already a hit in Germany. Demand was so huge that prices have increased for Wildenstein in Germany.
