French Wines
Today's wine world considers the wines of France as classics; where traditions, history and experience form the backbone of French winemaking. In spite of France's fame there are still gems and good value wines to be found.
France is home to most styles of wines, from the luxurious old bubbles of Champagne to the ultra powerful red wines of Medoc. Afterall, Bordeaux alone produced as much wine as the whole of Australia. Difference being France's refusal to waiver with the whims of fashion and consequently does not suffer from over-production.
We aim to scour France to bring you an ecclectic range of daily drinking wines and collectibles.
Burgundy
1. Henri Gouges Clos des Porrrets St. Georges 2007

'A wonderfully fresh and impressively broad nose offers up notes of menthol, dried flowers, dark berries and ample earth nuances that are also reflected by the rich, pure, balanced and impressively precise medium weight plus flavors that possess a hint of backend minerality as well as a touch of austerity. This is lovely and understated. Worth considering.' Burghound 90pts

2. Henri Gouges Les Chaignots 2007

This 1er cru is located on the northern side of Nuits St. Georges bordering Vosne-Romanée. The terroir blessed Les Chaignots with great finesse and elegance compared to typical Nuits St. Georges. Drinking well now!

3. Henri Gouges Les Perrieres Blanc 2008

This is a mutant Pinot Noir - yes, white pinot noir that used to grow from a red Pinot vine tree. Spotted by Monsieur Gouges in the 1940s (before WWI), he grafted the vines to make it possible for his decendents to produce us one barrel of this limited blanc. So limited, we were not offered to sample it at the Domaine! WV

4. Henri Gouges Les Prulliers 2007

'This is the first wine to display any oak influence at all and even here it is almost invisible, setting off fresh but very restrained, even brooding dark berry fruit aromas that are in keeping with the equally serious, intense, concentrated, full-bodied flavors that possess ample dry extract that confers a velvety mouth feel on what is actually a quite firmly structured, complex and admirably long finish. I quite like this...' Burghound (91-93)pts

5. Henri Gouges Les St. Georges 2007

'...this is the most elegant and refined wine ..red and dark berry fruit aromas nuanced by plenty of Nuits style earth and hints of game....attractively textured flavors that are at once delicious yet serious, well-muscled, precise and mineral-inflected while being supported by very firm tannins and first rate length. This is a classy effort that will age for several decades, perhaps a bit longer. Recommended.' Burghound 92pts

6. Henri Gouges Les Vaucrains 2007

'...a brooding and backward yet exceptionally fresh and classic nose of very ripe dark berry fruits, earth and game notes that also infuse the rich, full-bodied and broad-shouldered flavors that are quite powerful while sporting outstanding mid-palate concentration and length...outstanding for its balance, length and sense of harmony.'
